In Coquillay's work, beauty
takes on a miraculous dimension... Coquillay has the power to portray forever
those instants of happiness, grâce, elegance and purity that are the privilège
of adolescence. He fixes a moment in life for eternity. Translating the vital
spark into metal, Coquillay does away with the unbearable precariousness of
the flesh.
Coquillay
started by examining thoroughly ail the major modem sculptors. He possesses
their art fully in order to become himself. He reminds us of the cohorts of
those who made the twentieth century completely French with Wlerick, Despiau,
Maillol, Bourdelle, Janniot, Belmondo, and so many others.
Coquillay
is in their mind. Around a sculpture, a thousand references appear of the world
of French sculpture, the only one able to link form and feeling.
He has
enormous experience. He breathes youth into the strong models born of cubism,
giving them the lightness of an end-of the-century Twiggy. By working directly
in plaster, he achieves a degree of concision and a purity of line that are
ideal for translating elegance, and haughty, harmonious grâce. The young girls
portrayed by Coquillay are only juste nubile, but they are ready to spring up
and take on life. They discover their body, that Coquillay has taken hold of.
Never has the soûl, if it exists within the body, been better portrayed than
in the work of this artist.
